Are You Buying For-Profit Feminism? We Bet You Are And You Probably Don't Even Know It

What happens to Bitch Media when the New York Times asks pointed questions about the role of the commodification of feminist language in Trump’s rise to power while simultaneously commodifying feminist language for clicks?

What happens to us when for-profit, advertising-driven and investor-owned outlets like Condé Nast realize that they can make money publishing feminist perspectives?

The answer is complicated, but it boils down to two things:

1. When it comes to content, we dig deeper.
2. When it comes to our finances, well... we don’t know.

We've faced all kinds of challenges in our 21-year history as an independent, feminist media outlet—bookstore closures, markets crashing, Facebook controlling what news you see, and more generally, the Internet subverting the idea that media is worth paying for. But we've never faced a challenge like this.

Right now, we’ve got to raise $50,000 by February 28. Will you subscribe to award-winning Bitch magazine, become a member at $8 a month (membership includes a subscription to Bitch magazine and other snazzy stuff), or make a donation of $25 or more to help us reach our goal?

When it comes to outlets that market their financial and editorial independence as a feeling rather than make their financial and editorial independence a fact, well, that's something we can't get down with. We’re not interested in the kind of feminism that gets neatly packaged to be sold, or treats malleable minds as profitable consumers instead of engaged readers. Any feminism that gets used to cloak the same old machinery, do the same old work, and profit the same old people isn’t really feminism, is it?

Bitch Media is a nonprofit, independent media outlet with a 21-year history of publishing fiercely feminist perspectives that elevate marginalized voices, whether it’s popular or not. When you subscribe to Bitch magazine, become a member, or make a one-time gift of $25 today, you support that commitment (and get a limited-edition "Feminism Lives Here" sticker—pictured in that tiny little gorgeous pic!). At the end of the day, when you have to answer to attention-hungry corporations and the private interests of profit-driven investors, the only thing that truly matters is money. And when feminism stops selling? Well, you know what happens next.

That’s what this campaign is all about—recognizing feminism as a living tool that we use towards action, rather than feminism as a static brand that is meant to sell the idea of equality and empowerment without doing the work to make it a reality. We can’t afford to let feminism sit still. When feminism stops evolving, our work stops mattering. Feminism lives here, at Bitch Media, regardless of whether or not it’s popular. Feminism lives here, at Bitch Media, even when the perspectives we publish push back against what might feel good to read.

And we’re here, at Bitch Media, to work against the clean, mainstream, for-profit media narrative of calling ourselves feminists and then calling it a day.

Become a member, make a donation, or subscribe to Bitch magazine today. You’ll be playing a critical role in ensuring that feminist media remains unwaveringly, truly, feminist.

Are you with us? I really hope so.

Kate Lesniak is the publisher at Bitch Media.
