It's the end of the year (almost!) and we're looking ahead to January to dig in to a new "era" here at Bitch Media. With exciting programs on the horizon ready to launch, we're sharing 10 Reasons to Support Bitch Media to make our case for readers to invest in our future. This week's reason focuses on where our money comes from—and why that's so important. Technically, Reason #2 reads:
- Subscription income makes up less than 40 percent of our annual budget and we rely on generous contributions from people like you to make up the difference.
But I want to take a little bit of a different direction to get to why where that other 60 percent of our income is critically important to our mission as an independent, nonprofit, feminist media organization. In the nonprofit world, everyone—from big players like the United Way to smaller fish like local community organizations—has to raise the money it takes to keep the doors open, no matter what work you're doing. And when an organization relies on a few wealthy donors or institutions to provide those resources, you answer to them first and spend a lot of those resources to back up those answers.
And that's exactly why we work so hard here at Bitch Media to make sure that we aren't. We want to respond to the reader survey with programs that ring true to what our readers asked for, without any caveats that some mega-donor added in. We want to have the room to respond to what matters when it matters, and not back down with things get hairy. We want to make investments in programs based on the impact they have in fulfilling our organization's mission—not based on the impact they'll have on securing another major gift that comes with a special request. And, notably, we want to continute to provide content at bitchmedida.org for free. Which is why we rely on thousands of small contributions from folks just like you every year to make ends meet.
The truth is that subscription income (from Bitch, our quarterly magazine) makes up less than 40 percent of our annual budget and we ely entirely on generous contributions from people like you to make up the difference. To hit our goal this year, we need to raise $15,000 in gifts of $5, $10, $15, $50—whatever you can afford—from hundreds of our readers.
So what do you say? Will you pitch in a few bucks to help us hit our goal?
