Issue #32, Summer 2006
Art Director: Nicholas Brawley
Photographer: Jeffery Walls
Our senior editor, Rachel Fudge, commented one day that she'd seen intricately, artfully folded paper dresses in a San Francisco shop window, and we were inspired to create our own for the cover of this fashion-centric issue. Calling on the costume-mistress skills of Oakland pal Diana Stasko (a woman who once made a gorgeous, menstruation-themed dress out of pantiliners streaked with red glitter nail polish), we provided piles of magazine ads and let her go to town. The result is a beautiful garment, sure—but clearly visible in its gathers and pleats are endless reminders of the fashion and beauty imperatives that have historically defined and circumscribed the female experience.
