The Dear White People Trailer is Great! The Comments Section is Depressingly Racist Though.

Dear White People, of Twitter and Tumblr fame, is making a movie! And it looks hilarious!

Here's what the creators of Dear White People have to say about the film:

Remember when black movies didn't neccesarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to gospel numbers for no apparent reason? No? Damn...

Well believe it or not there was a time when "Black Art-House" was a thing. When movies like Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffle, and Boyz In Da Hood were breaking box office records as well as making us laugh, cry, and think in ways movies hadn't before.

The humble producers of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, a satire about being a black face in a white place, long to bring those days back. But we can't do it without you!

And here's the trailer:

Transcription available in .doc form here

The film is about "four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular 'African American' themed party thrown by white students." The trailer only has 304 views at the time of this post but already has 86 comments, many of which are depressingly racist. Thankfully, some commenters are voting this content down and getting it deleted, but some of it remains. Like:

All white people are racists. No black people are racist. I am sooo damned sick of hearing it.

not all white people are like this/how would you feel if there was a movie called 'dear black people'/i don't see race or colour black, white, red, yellow or green we are all HUMANITY/why do people have to talk about this, that won't solve anything/I have 3 black friends so I think I know what I'm talking about/it's racist to talk about racism/how come there's no white history month?/i'm not racist but.../this is so racist to white people/why are you people so sensitive/etc.

That last one is trying to be ironic *I think*, but it has 58 likes already and I doubt everyone's in on the joke.

Based on the response it's gotten so far, this movie is clearly necessary in a "post-racial" society that is anything but. Also, as a fan of academic hijinks movies like Animal House and Election (two films listed as influences for this one), I'm looking forward to some smart satire, college style.

Do you agree? Then get over to The Dear White People indiegogo page and donate already!

Good news (sorta)... the views currently listed as just over 300 isn't accurate. When videos receive a high amount of traffic in a short period of time, You Tube does not keep a real-time view-count. Periodically the view-count will update when it reaches certain thresholds, but until then it might sit around 300 for a bit. This is the occasional source of confusion and accusations of conspiracy in circumstances like these, as users often think that the view-count is real-time.

I said good news though because the 1,000+ likes that the video has received since it was posted earlier today suggest that the video and its message are being well received! :)

I can't deal with comments,

I can't deal with comments, so I didn't look. I DID, however, go and look at their indiegogo page and donated. I really hope to see it made!

So...this will prolly not go over well.

This might be simply due it just being a trailer, but this does seem to lean in bad direction for me. I am the really nerdy black kid who all the black activists at school think isn't black enough and give a hard time. I mostly date white people. So far this movie seems to portray these people as aiding and abetting white oppression. And well, this is super heterocentric looking from here. Never mind the class issues involved with the Ivyesque location. I'll reserve total judgement til I see it in whole, but for now I have some reservations.

Uh-Oh, Racists

The movie trailer is hilarious. I can only hope that an actual movie can be made sustaining this level of parody and satire. As an alum of one of the most legendarily racist and sexist Ivy League schools, Dartmouth College, I would love the reaction. I am always surprised when people seem shocked by how racist people in this country can be. It worries me sometimes that media such as this are only preaching to the choir. Look at the response to the video for Kanye and Jay-Z's No Church in the Wild or the furor over The Hunger Games casting.

The video is really hilarious! I have to give it to the creator of this video because the work was a truly authentic parody of what happens every day in our lives but rarely spoken about. Why is racism continuing so many years after racism is abolished?

I would love to know the answer for that question.
