Douchebag Decree: Chick-fil-A

Fast food chains, with their unhealthy menu options and shady labor practices, are already kinda douche-y. The well-known chicken hawkers (tee hee) at Chick-fil-A, however—not satisfied with just serving fried food to the masses—have raised the douche bar this month by being totally homophobic. Via

And so it goes like this: Chick-fil-A is a restaurant where franchises frequently donate to anti-gay organizations like the Pennsylvania Family Institute, Focus on the Family and others. The restaurant's charitable arm, WinShape, holds conferences for opponents of gay marriage and praises their work. And this charitable arm's Retreat program puts a blanket ban on gay couples using their facilities, because they "do not accept homosexual couples."

Recently, more and more info has come out on the restaurant's ties to the anti-gay movement. From sponsoring Christian marriage events run by anti-gay organizations to hosting retreats where gay couples are explicitly not allowed to donating to Focus on the Family to supporting an anti-equality video campaign, Chick-fil-A is serving up a veritable smorgasbord of homophobia.

Douche sandwich.

That behavior alone would be reason enough to award them this week's Douchebag Decree, but the icing on this d-bag cake is made of pure hypocrite. The hypocrite in question? Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, who released this video earlier this month stating that "Chick-fil-A serves all people, and values all people." Notice that he never mentions sexuality, nor does he address his organization's anti-gay activism. (He also leaves out any mention of his upcoming speaking engagement at Pat Robertson's Regent University, but no surprise there.)

Dan Cathy Statement from Chick-fil-A on Vimeo.

Sure, Chick-fil-A values all people when it comes to selling fried meat on a bun, but when it comes to supporting equal rights they clearly don't. (Attention gay people: You are allowed to buy sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, but don't ask them to cater your wedding reception.) Not only are they giving money and sandwiches (and apparently brownies, which I didn't even know they sold) to anti-gay causes, they're also lying about it and pretending like it's no big deal. Well guess what, Chick-fil-A? It is a big deal. Until you stop spending your hard-earned chicken money on homophobic causes, enjoy your hard-earned Douchebag Decree.

I have no idea why

I have no idea why Chick-Fil-A would even want to get in the middle of this. You're a fast food chain! Sell food! Why are you getting involved??

They have always been public

They have always been public about being a "values based" type company (which i guess now means radically christian) being closed on Sundays to always give their employees a day of rest and worship. Once again, this is discrimination with a religious/christian facade. This is not surprising to me at all. And as a gay woman, im really just over this type of acceptable discrimination...but really, how many retailers are we going to boycott?! Welcome to America. The best you can do is buy local, eat local (from your gay neighborhood friendly retailers) and organic whenever possible. (Nobody should be eating this fast food on a regular basis anyway.)

Too bad I already avoid fast

Too bad I already avoid fast food and am vegetarian, cuz otherwise I could boycott them! I mean for this specifically.

I will forgive you Chick-fil-A... long as you sell your delicious sandwiches on Sunday. Amen.

I wish I could say I was surprised. So what if they're the only thing open when I leave for work? I'll just use my rage as metal fuel for my "eat more oatmeal, bake more muffins" policy.

This is SO lame. Why the heck does a sandwich-making company give a chicken poop about gay marriage? It's one thing to be a jerk about it as an individual, but... as a company?? I mean, why can't they be satisfied with their mass slaughter of innocent animals? (I know I sound crunchy, but this is some severe evil we're dealing with here. Go cluck yourselves; you're a bunch of Chik-fil-A-holes!)

...which you probably

...which you probably wouldn't think if you were disabled or were close to someone who was.

...or if you were a decent human being.

lame 1    /leɪm/ Show Spelled

1    /leɪm/ Show Spelled [leym] Show IPA adjective, lam·er, lam·est, verb, lamed, lam·ing, noun
crippled or physically disabled, esp. in the foot or leg so as to limp or walk with difficulty.
impaired or disabled through defect or injury: a lame arm.
weak; inadequate; unsatisfactory; clumsy: a lame excuse. <----------
Slang . out of touch with modern fads or trends; unsophisticated.

Instead of getting on someone for a perfectly legitimate use of a word, why not tackle the real issues? like, for instance, the subject of this article? just sayin ....

So if I found a dictionary

So if I found a dictionary that included that slang usage of "gay" to mean "stupid" you'd decide that there were no problems with that use?

On the contrary, the 3rd

On the contrary, the 3rd definition is not a slang definition. The fourth one is. Seriously, what's the big issue here? The word or the homophobia?

As should be obvious, BOTH (in the opinions of at least some). Kyriarchy can't REALLY be undermined if we are reinforcing some -isms while attempting to dismantle others.

Holy carp, someone is

Holy carp, someone is honestly popping out Derailing for Dummies lines on Bitch. Oh no, you just didn't.

You do not get to decide what's "more important". You do not get to appropriate words, and justify their shitty use because you have no empathy.

Get a thesaurus, and stop being so lazy.

Just stepping in...

Hi everyone,

Sorry I'm just responding to this now! Here at Bitch we most definitely consider "lame" to be an ableist term. We don't use it ourselves, and we don't want commenters to use it either. (Especially not when there are so many better alternatives!) Check out our comments policy (linked to in my signature below) for more information. For those of you who insist on using the term or think it "isn't a big deal" well, you're welcome to use the word on your own blogs but we don't allow it here.

Thanks to everyone who stepped in on this thread to better explain why "lame" is not an acceptable term while I was away from my computer!

wow amanda

Amanda what about lashing out and calling someone lazy? May not be an albeist term but sounds a bit nasty and out of order to term someone lazy just for expressing their opinion on using terminology.

And call me what you will, but here is mine...i think all this defensive p.c. word usage talk is pretty silly when we are all commenting on an artice with "douche bag" as the subject in a blog space for "bitch media" !!

We've been over this

How many times have the mods justified the use of "bitch" and "douchebag" on this website? Many, many times. But, because it appears it needs to be said again, "Bitch" is a word that some feminists have reclaimed as empowering. Because women are a marginalized group, some of us have taken a word that has usually been used to keep us in place and have centered on its positive qualities--assertiveness, take-no-shit attitude, etc. Sounds feminist to me. As for douchebag, another one the mods have explained many times, douche is the perfect feminist insult because it describes a product marketed by men that's bad for women's bodies. What better word is there to describe someone in line with the patriarchy?

And this is just personal, but I hate the phrase "PC Police". Feminist sensitivities to abelist language is actually far from PC, which as you should know, is all about NOT disturbing the norm. It is PC to not offend anyone powerful. Feminism is the opposite of PC. The phrase also suggests degredation and while you may not think words mean anything, many of us believe they do. I don't think that avoiding abelist language to make the feminist community as inclusive as possible and a safe space for all is laughable. Not at all.

Sorry for the misquote, you

Sorry for the misquote, you didn't write "PC Police but rather just "defensive P.C. word usage". Apologies.

In support of MCL

Thank you, MCL, for posting the definitions of the word "Lame"; While political correctness is usually a good thing, it is not when it is taken to the extreme. Thank you for showing that the person who originally used the word "lame" in the posting was not necessarily using the word as a slur to those who may be handicapped. It is good to be sensitive, but overly sensitive - hmmm - not so much.

I agree with what you said,

I agree with what you said, but mostly I wanted to say that that last sentence was INSPIRED! :)

I would not support this. I

I would not support this. I have never eaten there and I guess I never will. I will also tell others about this because I'm sure they would not agree with this. This company only values their narrow beliefs and the money they receive from poisoning customers. I don't understand how people can be anti love.

Is it just me? ...

I have noticed an interesting correlation of companies based/headquartered in the Southern United States and their shady "family values" practices of aligning with virtually any cause that is spearheaded by the religious-right. You know, those xenophobic, homophobic, anti-choice, racist, ableist, anti-government folks that are probably conspiring right this very moment to ban websites and causes such as this one, and anything deemed "progressive" by the ilk of the Glenn Becks?

It seems to me a "civil war" is brewing, and we need to work on stopping it before it really happens ...

A Civil War brewing? I think you are overgeneralizing here. What are all these southern businesses that are donating to the religious right? And why do you think that it's mostly southern businesses that do that? I don't see facts in your post, just a reinforcement of stereotypes about Southerners being backwards & ignorant.

Douche sandwich...

Is really hilarious.

As appalling as this is, I'm not surprised. I knee a guy who worked at CFA. He was a conservative, anti-gay Evangelical Christian and most, if not all, of his co-workers were from his church. While this is a restaurant, it was founded by a conservatively Christian man. It's unfortunate that CFA has chosen to go the route of alienation. Being a restaurant with a political/moral slant will backfire on them.

What's with the "douche bag" ?

Exactly how is it empowering to women to use a feminine hygeine product as a derogatory term?

As the moderators of this

As the moderators of this site have explained many times, and as I repeated earlier in the comment thread, douche is the perfect feminist insult because it describes a product marketed by men that's bad for women's bodies. What better word is there to describe someone in line with the patriarchy?
