Douchebag Decree: Facebook, [Controversial Humor], and "12 year old slut meme's"

I can't be the only person out there thankful to have graduated high school before Facebook was really A Thing. Sure, I made some questionable decisions back then, but that's between me and my old photo albums. I am able to move on with a better haircut and better judgment, the way it should be. Not so for teens today, whose every move is documented and who will likely look back one day and cringe.

Making matters worse—way worse—for young people online and for the world in general is a new page on Facebook called "12 year old slut meme's" [sic], dedicated to slut-shaming and general douchebaggery. Since the page launched last month, Facebook users have asked that it be taken down as a violation of the site's hate speech policy, but as of the publishing of this post it's going strong with 214,489 fans.

The site's stated purpose is, "Embarrassing those who embarrass themselves." Founded by two 19-year olds, Dom and James, "12 year old slut meme's" takes photos of young girls from Facebook in sexualized poses and reposts them with snarky captions and clever one-liners like "kill yourself" and "wut slut" to encourage the ever-growing community to comment on their slutty tween sluttiness.

Understandably, some people have taken offense at this offensive content. A Change.org petition went up a few days ago asking for the page to be removed, but so far all Facebook has done is put the [Controversial Humor] title up, saying, "We find this Page distasteful, it does not currently violate our terms" because it "does not pose a material threat to anyone's safety."

Are there explicit threats being made on the page? No, not that I've seen. But not only does this type of page contribute to rape culture (notice the comments on the above screen cap), misogyny, and slut-shaming, it does so at the expense of 12-year-old girls. They're still three years away from being eligible for a learner's permit, yet it's fine for adults to tell them to "kill themselves" because they are sluts. Considering what we're learning about the dangers of cyberbullying, it's safe to say this most certainly does threaten the safety of those involved.

Before you can say "but freedom of speech!" consider Soraya Chemaly's thoughts on the matter:

This is so not a "first amendment" (gasp! Censorhip!) issue. Clearly Facebook censors content all the time. Inciting racist content, homophobic content, anti-insert-your-religion-here- content. They are just not clear about their violently misogynistic content.

Dom and James are allowed to say whatever they want, but Facebook doesn't have to host it. In fact, Tumblr has already removed a "12 year old slut meme's" page from its network.

This isn't the first time Facebook has been taken to task for questionable content, and it surely isn't the last, which begs the question: Why does the site allow this type of page to exist in the first place? Considering that we had to make up a fake name here at Bitch (Belinda Median, pleased to meet you!) just to get our organizational page up and running, you'd think censoring a douchefest like "12 year old slut meme's" would be a no brainer.

In response to the backlash, "12 year old slut meme's" posted the following note on Tuesday:

Due to the amount of legal strife that we have been running into about the group, and the fact that we are just two 19 year old guys that obviously can't afford a law suit to their name, we have regrettably decided to close the page, permanently.

I know we have lots of devoted fans that come on here to see the countless arguments and dumb sluts trying to justify themselves, sometimes it's just too personally detrimental to have something like this group and it has to die.

We'll miss you guys. Thanks for everything guys.

Dom & James.

Nahhhhhh, just gammin'.
As long as there are sluts, we will put them in their place. Keep the submissions coming guys.
We're not going anywhere. x

The note has been liked 9,504 times so far. Aaand humanity is the worst.

Sign the petition to remind Facebook that publicly humiliating underage girls is, in fact, a threat to their safety here.

Maybe they shouldn't be

Maybe they shouldn't be acting like sluts publicly. If you post something to the internet, you know that people are going to see it. You want to place blame on someone? Blame the dumb ass girls' parents for not monitoring their internet use. Or how about encouraging personal responsibility? Oh wait, you're not capable of that. In your twisted worldview, all of society's problems are the fault of men, and women are perpetual victims. It's shit like this that makes almost no one take feminism seriously.

Speaking of personal

Speaking of personal responsibility when has it ever been a responsible act for adults to pick on children? The targets of this meme are 12 year old children. It would still be wrong if the genders were reversed. When has it ever been okay no matter what the child's behavior is for adults to gather and direct comments like "someone needs a bit of rapin" and "kill yourself" at them. How can you honestly sit there and say that the children should take more responsibility over their actions than the adults hurling insults and inappropriate comments at them.

Well, 12 year olds aren't

Well, 12 year olds aren't even meant to be on facebook, as sign up age is 13
anyway, any pictures posted are something that the girls have posted, on the fucking internet.

did you know that even if they deleted the status, it would still be able to be seen through certain methods for seven years before it's wiped.

Pre-teen sluts who've committed fraud, yeah and it's other peoples fault for calling them out and telling them to kill themselves

Their parents should be fucking ashamed that they raised such stupid children

Yes, let's put the

Yes, let's put the responsibility on EVERYONE but the people who are actually doing the shitty thing itself. That makes perfect sense.

Dude, when have

Dude, when have twelve-year-olds been responsible for anything? I think it's the parents' responsibly to govern the actions of a child. A child shouldn't be able to post things like that. *But*, if he or she does, he or she shouldn't be called out on it - the parents ought to be. How many stupid things did you do when you were twelve? How many of those things were then accessible to hundreds of thousands of strangers who had absolutely no interest in helping you learn better ways to get attention?

Speaking of responsibility...

If you want to do something about the kid's posting "slutty" pictures, link the page to CPS. There's no excuse for sending it to a page run by two guys who are likely pedophiles (after all, they spend great amounts of time and effort looking through pictures/posts of underage girls, and have, in fact, dedicated a FB page to the effort). So, who's diverting responsibility again?

Oh honey no, if you don't

Oh honey no, if you don't know what you're talking about please refrain from exposing everyone to your ignorance.

Could it be argued that, by

Could it be argued that, by posting pictures of underage girls without their consent AND by labeling them as sluts they are guilty of child pornography? I haven't seen the pictures but, I guess it could be said that it's the language that actually sexualizes them and makes them vulnerable to sexual predators.

I don't know, I have zero legal background, but why would this be okay if it's not okay for any adult to share pictures of minors in online forums of a sexual nature (i.e. sexual fantasy forums, for example)?

Not sure if this makes sense but if it does, it could be a way to get them to stop.

I wonder about this, also.

I wonder about this, also. Does the page involve photos? Fetishizing 12 year old girls certainly seems, at the very least, on it's way toward child pornography.

That being said, I have young cousins who are active on Facebook. Like the OP says, I sure am glad that I didn't have something like Facebook to track my pre-teen (or even 19 year old) idiocy.

You've got the history of

You've got the history of this page wrong. James and Dom did not actually create 12 Year Old Slut Memes. My friend Jole and I created it. We used to own it until some assholes stole the page off me. It then got stolen by Dom and James from the assholes. At this point the page at around 100k. Ever since then it grew bigger and bigger. But Yeah, they did not create. They are just the current admins. Just thought you should know the true history of this page.
