So, as I was looking into this whole WIN Network thing, I ran into this post from baseballthinkfactory.org about Jeanne Zelasko, about whom I wrote in my previous post. Seems a few months ago Zelasko made it known to the Dodgers powers that be that she wanted to be considered as the play-by-play announcer for a package of 50 away games for the team.
She was not even allowed into the running.
The Internet scuttlebutt—as epitomized by the BBTF commenters—about the situation leans heavily toward the, "It's not because she's a woman; it's because she sucks" variety.
I haven't seen enough of her work for me to argue one way or the other, but I have to say, this line of reasoning seems awfully common whenever a woman enters into a traditionally male realm. It's the ol' Meg White argument: Oh, I don't hate her because she's a woman, it's because she's a shitty drummer! As if there have never been any male shitty drummers in the history of the world.
I'm going to spend the next couple of days checking out the archives of Zelasko's WIN play-by-play and see if she truly does suck as hard as everyone says she does. I doubt she does. Which means of course, there must be some other reason why folks are so offended by the idea of her in the broadcast booth. Hmm...I wonder what it could be?
In the meantime, check out the BBTF blog comments and let us know what you think.
