The New Normal: One Million Moms Protest Ryan Murphy's Gay Family Show, NBC Responds

Remember One Million Moms (OMM), the group that is still protesting JC Penney, Oreo cookies, and that show GCB that no one watched? Well, they've got a new target in their sights: NBC's upcoming sitcom The New Normal.

The horror!

Says OMM:

NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage. These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture...

Millions of Americans strongly believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. NBC's "The New Normal" is attempting to desensitize America and our children. It is the opposite of how families are designed and created. You cannot recreate the biological wheel.

Gasp! Not the "biological wheel"! Until now, every television show has adhered strictly to biological realism! That's why LOST was so scary. If we allow gay dads into our homes, all hell will break loose!

The New Normal is a yet-to-be-aired show by creator Ryan Murphy about a gay couple having their first child with a surrogate. Judging by this trailer, bonds are formed, hijinks ensue, and a fairly traditional, cheesy-but-heartstring-pulling family show is born:

We haven't had a chance to see an episode yet (the show premieres in September) but it looks pretty standard. Mostly white, mostly formulaic, mostly about warm fuzzies and babies and following your dreams—with doses of cute kid, inappropriate older white lady, and "sassy" black lady thrown in there for good measure. Yes, the protagonists are gay, but beyond that my guess is that The New Normal will reinforce the very traditional family values OMM claims to stand for, the same way Modern Family does with those voiceovers at the end of every episode. Why is this the show they're protesting and not, say, Charlie Sheen's Anger Management? (Because of homophobia obviously, but you see what I mean.)

NBC entertainment president Jennifer Salke responded to the protests today saying, "[Murphy] is a guy who pushes the envelope, but this show is really his love letter to families," and, "It's just meant to … bring a family show to the public that captures the zeitgeist, and what's going on in the country right now and being more inclusive." (Translation: Gay parenting is now mainstream enough that we'll air a show about it. Cool your jets, OMM, because no one cares.)

As a feminist killjoy, I must point out that The New Normal appears to reinforce some tired stereotypes about gay men (they're so materialistic! they're obsessed with dieting! they're a straight woman's best friend!) and employ the aforementioned ageist and racist tropes (since it's a network sitcom, I'm sure you aren't surprised). As a pop culture lover though, I must point out that the more representations of different types of families on TV, the better. Also, Andrew Rannells is totally the best side character on Girls, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in this.

OMM claims they're "prepared to contact any and all sponsors of this program if it is aired." I'm not sure who those sponsors are, but if they're spending money to support a sitcom about gay families I doubt they'll listen to OMM's homophobic paranoia. The New Normal's portrayal of nontraditional families might not be perfect, but at this point it is pretty normal.

Hm. This show looks like it

Hm. This show looks like it will be boring, but I totally agree that the more diverse families are represented in standard boring sitcoms, the better.

But: GCB was cancelled?! I loved that show. Sad face.

NBC Garbage

The new normal isnt normal...its a sick life as describe by a sick individual...Cancel this one too, before it airs.

Not Normal

My family and all i will boycot any organization who supports this sick and twisted show.
This has puck in my throat.
All normal married people should be sick with this slap in the face for thier effort to raise a family.
NBC is now calling all Christian families -Abnormal. WAKE UP AMERICA

the new normal

If you have a puck in your throat you have bigger problems than watching a tv program that doesn't jive with your own opinion of programming that represents the world you live in. Get out and ask someone to teach you how hockey is played because pucks are meant to stay on the ice.
I am straight, married and raising 4 sons (1,3,5,8) and I can only hope that I raise them to be loving citizens, who can think for themselves.
For every business you boycott more of us who don't care for segregation and alienation will reward with our dollars.
